About 15 years ago, Minervino came across a copper-silver ionization technology developed 50 years ago by NASA engineers to keep drinking water safe on the early Apollo space missions. She paid for a unit to be installed on her swimming pool and the water stayed perfectly clear with reduced chemical usage. “All summer long, I sat there with my mouth wide open saying ‘I can’t believe this, I can’t believe this,’ ” she recalls.

Winterizing with Ionization

November 3, 2021

For more than a decade, Coastal Pure Inc., has been using an affordable, effective technology called copper/silver ionization (CSI) to reduce chemical impact for our commercial clients. Slashing chlorine demand while providing cleaner, healthier water consistently saves customers thousands of dollars in annual chemical operating costs.

Study Shows Ionization is Effective

September 1, 2020

Copper-silver ionization uses electrodes, kept outside the pool near the pool filter. Electrical current runs through the electrodes, and the resulting ions kill pathogens. In 2017, Richardson’s team began studying water samples from two commercial pools Coastal Pure treated with ionization, one indoors and one outdoors. The research team also conducted simulated pool experiments in the lab to better control the variables, which Richardson says is difficult in real pools because of varying bather loads, contaminants, chlorine levels and water sources.

Making swimming pools safer by reducing chlorine disinfection byproducts

February 17, 2021

Swimming in indoor or outdoor pools is a healthy form of exercise and recreation for many people. However, studies have linked compounds that arise from chlorine disinfection of the pools to respiratory problems, including asthma, in avid swimmers. Now, researchers have found that using a complementary form of disinfection, known as copper-silver ionization (CSI), can decrease disinfection byproducts and cell toxicity of chlorinated swimming pool water.
